Skepticism extends beyond used cars, religion, and diet fads. It is, essentially, having an active BS meter armed with accurate-as-we-can-manage knowledge about the world we live in, and giving a second look at everything, including our own cultural assumptions.

The Skepchicks just posted an article about several of the things that make me not want to ever be pregnant. I think they only left out the likelihood of episiotomy and other post-pregnancy sexual changes, the risk of permanent but generally low-level incontinence (urinary or fecal), and that one also pisses oneself during delivery.

http://skepchick.org/blog/2010/02/what-pregnant-women-wont-tell-you-ever/

Please, forward their link around. It may educate someone who “never saw that bit on TV.” Arm your BS meters, people. Then make your choices.

New rounds of medicine have not helped the chronic fatigue, and I’m out of energy for so many things after 3 years fighting this. While it’s no surprise, really, at this point, I am podfading. 75 episodes, not a bad run. Thanks to all of you for listening, especially those who have become my friends and whom I would never have met if not for podcasting.

I do owe apologies to Laura Scott for her great interview. My recorder’s SD card died right as I was uploading the file to my PC. Her new book, Two is Enough, has a Facebook page and website, and the rather fascinating research-based book can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Two-Enough-Couples-Living-Childless/dp/1580052630

The recorder has since had its card replaced and gone to another podcaster that will give it more use. I have other, less robust-sounding mikes for recording clips for other folks, but I don’t anticipate resurrecting this project any time soon. If you would like to take over the show or this feed for a similar show, etc. please email me at podcast at gettingby.net and we can figure out something.

I have updated my hub page http://gettingby.net/ with contact info, Twitterage and other projects, and costume gallery. Check there to see what I do with my waking hours these days.

Chris the Fixed Kitty, signing out.

Rumors of my podfading are greatly exaggerated. The loss of Perry hit me pretty hard, and then the new kitten wore me out, and me worn out (as usual) shortly led to my getting sick for a few days. I was too aware of missing DragonCon this year, Mr. Fixed Kitty and I are getting a new D&D campaign and world rolling that takes up way more time than I thought it would, and I just didn’t have any Happy Things in me for a bit there. The Happy is coming back slowly.

I am picking myself back up, I have a file mostly ready to go, and I’m about to go for some vacation time with Mr. Fixed Kitty. The podcast will go up afterwards, as I’m now frantically getting ready and trying to pre-emptively rest at the same time. I really need the Bust Outta Dodge time.

Catch you on the flipside,

Big happy: JOB!!! ok, for three weeks. Still, I’m excited. Hope to keep up with the weekly cast, but I may miss next week. All encouraging or nagging messages can be sent by any of the contact means in the show notes. Email or Twitter are preferred, as I can reply to those on my phone on the train.

Segment of original show notes, showing how much things stay the same over the years:
NOW REPOSTED DUE TO CRAPPY FEED PROBLEMS. Thanks go to Stephen Eley for helping me diagnose my initial blunder. He does a sci fi and fantasy short fiction podcast called The Escape Pod over at http://www.EscapePod.org and is just generally a really nice guy.

As always, this is copyright 2007, Chris Fisher, all rights reserved. In this episode, Ian and I get very personal and talk about our experiences getting fixed. So, as always, if you want to use any clips from this podcast, you have to get permission first. You can ask at podcast at gettingby.net…

I would call this “the cursed episode” if I were superstitious. This interview was initially recorded and abandoned due to special editing difficulties with that recording, re-recorded (thank you, Ian for your patience), edited, about to have the intro tacked on, and then a power outage and router reconfiguration took over 3 evenings of my computer time last week. If I haven’t responded to an email from you, I’m still catching up. Then I spent another evening backing up machines and installing new sound software. Today I check over the file, and there are sound gaps in it where I see waveforms on the screen but no sound comes out. So what you are hearing is the 2nd complete re-edit of the 2nd recording. The irony that this is episode 39, 13 times 3, does not escape me. Now, onto the show, whose 2nd re-edit was originally going to go out on Wednesday Feb 21st. *sigh*

Show notes:
Ian Horner of the Dai-cast can be found at http://www.tiltyhouse.com .

Since we have to reboot the blog and I’m having a helluva chronic fatigue slump (antivirals, would you kick in again already, please?) that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, here’s what’s happening: I’m going weekly with short new Happy Things intros and replaying the best of list. You’ll get weekly content that takes me less time to produce, the podcast will keep happening while my body decides whether half-dosage is gonna work, and it sure beats taking summer entirely off.

The Best of list was intended particularly for new listeners who want to hopscotch through the archives to get a feel for the show. I selected 5 episodes from each year that seemed of most enduring interest. The links go to the permanent pages of the episodes on the old blog, which have the download and player buttons for the mp3. I will repost the whole list with the new links when they have all been reposted to the feed.

Year 1, March 2006-March 2007: Here are 5 of my favorite interviews from the first year that can quickly catch new listeners up. My audio skills got better over time, thank goodness!
1. Jerry Steinberg, founding non-Father of the No Kidding! social organization, part 1
2. Jerry Steinberg, founding non-Father of the No Kidding! social organization, part 2
3. Dr. Wendy Casper discusses a recent study on singles and family-friendly policies, very applicable to childfree folks in the workplace.
4. Laura Ciaccio, law student, blogger, and one of No Kidding’s national spokespersons discusses her CF life.
5. Ian and Snippage. Ian and I discuss our very different experiences getting fixed.

Year 2, March 2007-March 2008:
1. TASCF-Ep046 News and Issues with LT and Vinny
2. TASCF-Ep047 News and Jerry S returns
3. TASCF-Ep048 Site news and Matthew of Off Topic Talk
4. TASCF-Ep051 PeterRios-ComicGeekSpeak
5. TASCF-Ep053 George Hrab part 1 and TASCF-Ep054 Back George Hrab2

Year 3, March 2008-March 2009:
1. CFS cry for help from the podosphere. This brief PSA is in the list to explain the health context of my CF life. It’s applicable to all episodes starting in January 2007 as far as context goes, but I am no longer seeking help trying to get into clinical trials or specialists’ offices.
2. TASCF Ep057: Childfree Step-parents
3. TASCF-Ep058-MinxPolyamoryWeekly
4. TASCF-60 Ginger Campbell, MD of the Brain Science Podcast
5. TASCF-065:3 years of TASCF, Juanzetta Flowers interview Technically the first show of year 4, but definitely something new listeners should hear.

Thanks for listening! CF out.

The show will now be based off this blog page with its much-easier-to-remember URL. The old stuff is still at http://gettingby.net/blog/nfblog although I expect some of the files to no longer be connected sometime in the near future. I’ll be posting the “best of” list from the 3 preceeding years of TASCF and repodcasting them to get them in this feed over the course of the summer.

Is the feed changing! Yep, that too. More details and links and easy buttons as they begin to exist.

Things will be a little hectic while all of this happens. In the meantime, may I suggest you check out the Brass Needles podcast at http://www.brassneedles.com/ where I have become “the erstwhile co-host.” This is a sci-fi, steampunk, and knitting podcast.

Chris the Fixed Kitty, signing out.
